Derek is the co-host of all four hours of WCCB News Rising, a news and entertainment morning show on Charlotte’s CW. Derek also produces, writes and anchors “The Snark Report,” an irreverent daily look at entertainment news and trends. Franchise reporting includes “Daddy Derek” and “One Tank Trips” along with topical special reports on a variety of issues. Derek also served as a special correspondent for “Anderson Live” and has covered several red carpet events in Hollywood.

Derek is also a staff meteorologist at WCCB and holds a Certificate of Meteorology from Mississippi State University. He was honored with the 2009 Best Weathercast Award by the Radio Television Digital News Association of the Carolinas (RTDNAC). In 2010 he was awarded Best Sports Reporting for a story on how weather affects NASCAR. Less than three years after being promoted to Rising co-host, Derek was voted Favorite Male Anchor by readers of Elevate Charlotte Magazine in 2012 & again in 2013.

Derek was the radio morning host on K104.7 in 2007 & 2008, raising ratings by more than 30% in adults 25-54.

Prior to joining WCCB in 2005, Derek was Assistant Program Director/Music Director/Afternoon Personality for 107.9 The Link and an On Air Personality for Star 94 in Atlanta.

Derek began his broadcasting career at the age of 15 as host and executive producer of Video News Live, a live weekly cable access news program in Waupaca, Wisconsin. Shortly thereafter, he was hired as a radio news anchor for WDUX AM/FM in Waupaca. While a sophomore in high school, Derek gained national exposure for his coverage of a propane train tanker derailment/fire and eighteen day evacuation of residents in nearby Weyauwega in 1996.

Derek resides in South Charlotte with his wife Kristen, sons Tyler and Chase and a chocolate lab named Dawson.
